Reeds 101!

2.5, 3, 3.5–Have you wondered what the numbers you see on your reed mean? The number refers to the reed’s strength, or more specifically, its flexibility or ability to vibrate. The lower the number, the easier to vibrate the reed. That’s why we begin students on a 2.5 reed. As you develop your embouchure, you will move up to the next strength.

How will you know when to switch up? Well, if start to notice your reed is producing a buzzy tone when playing or you begin having trouble playing notes in the upper register, maybe it’s time to move up from your current strength.

Ultimately, your band director or private lesson teacher can you help determine this!

Music is Life Changing

The new school year means that many young people will be opening an instrument case for the first time in their life, which means their life will never be the same again. Put a musical instrument in the hands of a young person and their life changes forever, and for the better.

-Vaughan Fleischfresser

We’ve seen this quote floating around the internet and wanted to continue uplifting this amazing message. Perfect for the new school year and all of our beginning musicians.
