Beginner Practice!

We said we would suggest a practice strategy, and here you have it! This is a chart designed with the beginning player in mind. How long should practice should be? How much time should be given for each skill and how do we effectively practice them? Great questions.

With long-tones, you want a clear attack using the tongue, steady air flow, a consistent embouchure, and to hold the note as long as you can with a clear release. When practicing tonguing (for brass), the tip of the tongue strikes behind the top teeth much like saying the letter “T." For scales and patterns, take the Bb Major scale and the chromatic scale and play them up to a note that's comfortable, and back down. This builds practical muscle memory.

While there is no “one way“ to properly practice, this is a great strategy for the beginning musician.
