Ready for a mouthpiece beyond the beginning piece you started with? When you're going into a mouthpiece trial, think about a couple of things:
•Why are you in the market for a new mouthpiece?
•Has your teacher told you it's time to move up, are you looking for a change to your sound, or are you looking for an advantage of a step up mouthpiece?
•What do you want to change about your sound? Deeper, richer, brighter, shallower, more jazzy, or easier to play in tune are all things to consider when developing a fundamental sound.
As you're trying mouthpieces, here are some things to notice:
•What is your tone quality like? Is it pinched and sharp or is it unsupported and flat?
•What is the resistance like on this mouthpiece? Is it free blowing or is it harder to produce a sound?
•How does this mouthpiece sound and respond in all registers of your instrument?
•Finally, are you happy with how the mouthpiece change compliments your personal sound?
What other questions do you have about demoing a new mouthpiece?!
